Unlocking Word Recognition: Practical Structured Literacy Strategies for Secondary Teachers.

This course is designed for secondary teachers who want to deepen their understanding of word recognition and its critical role in reading development. Participants will explore the science of reading, the cognitive processes involved in word recognition, the challenges faced by struggling readers, and effective instructional strategies that align with evidence-based research.  Completion of this course will prepare participants to take LETRS Volume 2 with a focus on Language Comprehension in the Fall. In addition, this course partially fulfills the structured literacy professional development requirements. 

 Credit: 5.5 hrs. (Act 48)

 Cost: No Charge

Lunch Arrangements:

Please note that lunch will not be provided as part of the course. Participants have the flexibility to bring their own meals, with access to microwaves and a refrigerator available onsite for your convenience. This arrangement allows you to cater to your dietary preferences and needs during the training session.

3rd -12th Grade ELA, Special Education, EL Teachers and Instructional Coaches
Learner Outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Define and explain the components of word recognition within the framework of the science of reading.
  • Build students’ decoding skills so they can read complex multisyllabic words.
  • Identify common barriers to word recognition in secondary education, including the impact of phonological awareness and orthographic knowledge.
  • Implement evidence-based strategies to support students in improving their word recognition skills.
  • Evaluate and adapt existing curricula to better address word recognition needs.
