Beyond the Textbook: Engaging Students Through Productive STEM Discussions

Join us for an engaging one-day professional development experience designed for K-12 educators looking to deepen their understanding of effective STEM instruction using The Five Practices for Orchestrating Productive Discussions. This interactive workshop will enhance your fluency in the five practices—anticipating, monitoring, selecting, sequencing, and connecting—to create meaningful and productive classroom discussions that drive student learning beyond the textbook.

Target Audience
K-12 educators, instructional coaches, and curriculum leaders looking to improve their facilitation of student discussions in math and STEM subjects.
Learner Outcomes

Through hands-on activities, collaborative lesson planning, and applications including Dash robotics coding and exploration of an air quality dataset using CODAP, participants will explore strategies to:

  • Anticipate student thinking to guide instructional decisions
  • Monitor student work to uncover and leverage diverse ideas
  • Select and sequence student responses to maximize learning opportunities
  • Connect student ideas to STEM concepts to deepen understanding
  • Foster an inclusive, discussion-rich STEM learning environment
