Plan for Success: Implementing AAC with Young Children (Session 1 out of 3)

This virtual, interactive 2-hour session equips SLPs with foundational and introductory knowledge of AAC, practical strategies for AAC implementation, and fostering collaboration with teams and families. Through case studies, reflective activities, and collaborative planning, participants will gain actionable insights to enhance children’s needs and communication outcomes.

  1. Define AAC and its role in enhancing communication for people with complex communication needs 

  1. Identify 3 different types of lite tech and high-tech options for AAC 

  1. Describe 3 different situations where recommending AAC is warranted

9:00-9:15 AM Welcome/Introduction 

  • Brief overview of session objectives 

  • Ice Breaker Activity: What does communication mean to you?

9:15-10:15 AM: What is AAC? Why recommend AAC? 

  • Definitions 

  • Lite Tech (PECs, AAC, switches, etc.) 

  • High Tech (SGDs and associated apps) 

  • Review of EBP / myths around AAC 

  • When to recommend AAC 

  • Special considerations question on IEP (?) 

10:15-10:45 AM: Break Out Rooms/Collaboration 

  • Discuss a scenario where a student needed AAC. Why did you recommend AAC?  

 

10:45-11:00 AM: Break Out Room Summary / Q&A 

  • Note taker: type responses simultaneously 

  • Document “repeat responses” to highlight commonality
